THE AZTEC CALENDAR
A WORKSHOP WITH CARLOS ACEVES

Join us for an Interactive workshop with Carlos Aceves on the Aztec Calender, Saturday, April 10 at the Mesilla Community Center as part of the 16th Annual Border Book Festival, Shooting Stars.

Participants will:

  • Create a basic model of the Wheel based on the original geometric process of Tloque Nauoque (Nahuatl) or Hunab Ku (Maya). 
  • Learn and practice the numerology used as a mnemonic device to remember the knowledge of the Wheel.
  • Take a journey through the Wheel and find their own "names" in the Calendar.
  • Learn at least where five astronomcial cycles are kept in the Wheel.
  • Start and takes home the "Crown of Knowledge" given to those that complete the teachings of the Wheel.

The workshop is two hours long with a short break in between. All materials are provided. Additional  notes can be taken if participants bring a notebook and pencil/pen.

Participants will sit in a circle (on the floor) so we ask you to bring pillows. The space will be used to create drawings within a circle at least 10 feet in diameter.

The workshop is limited to 20 people so please register early. There is NO COST. A donation box will be placed for those who wish to contribute keeping in mind the cost of the materials.

 

CARLOS ACEVES, M.Ed

Aceves is an educator with fifteen years experience in bilingual early childhood education. He earned his Masters in Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at El Paso and currently teaches at Canutillo Elementary. He initiated his renowned Xinachtli Project in 1992, and formats lesson presentations daily in his classroom and weekly in presentations in other classrooms with partner teachers. He has published several articles and has written a new novel, "Diadema." Aceves is a member of the Meakan/Garzas Band of the Coahuiltecans.
